Psychiatry less talk more drugs

(NaturalHealth365) It turns out talk is expensive and psychiatrists can’t afford to listen to their patients problems. Many of the nation’s psychiatrists, because of insurance will no longer provide talk therapy. The form of psychiatry popularized by Sigmund Freud and was the corner stone of therapy has just been marginalized. Instead a prescription pad is used to alleviate all that ails the patients. After a brief consultation with each patient, medication is prescribed and the patient is sent on their way.

More Drugs

Medicine is rapidly changing from a caring personal experience to one dominated by large hospital groups, and pharmaceutical interests. The doctor patient interaction is a key component to psychiatry, with that loss it has become a drug mill.

When Dr. Levin, 68, was trained as a traditional psychiatrist at Michael Reese Hospital a Chicago medical center that is now closed, talk therapy was the standard of treatment. He treated 50 to 60 patients in once-or–twice weekly talk therapy sessions that lasted 45 minutes each. Now, like most of the profession he treats 1,200 people in mostly 15-minute visits for prescription adjustments. At one time he knew his patients’ inner lives, now he usually can’t remember their names.

At one time his goal was to help his patients become happy and fulfilled, at this time it is to keep them functional. Dr. Levin has found the transition difficult. Now he resists helping patients manage their lives. A direct quote: “I had to train myself not to get too interested in their problems.” Also, he said: “and not to get sidetracked trying to be a semi-therapist.”

Brief consultations are now common, said Dr .Steven S. Sharfstein, a former president of the American Psychiatric Association and the president and chief executive of Sheppard Pratt Health System, Maryland’s largest behavior health system. Dr. Steven S. Sharfstein telling words: “They check up on people; they pull out the prescription pad; they order tests.

There are no more couches in psychiatrist offices, there is no time or space for patients to lie down or talk.

The switch from talk therapy to medications has changed psychiatry forever. A 2005 government survey found that just 11 percent of psychiatrists provided talk therapy to all patients, and the rate is falling. Psychiatric hospitals, which once offered patients’ months of talk therapy now, discharge them within days with bottles of pills.

Recent studies point to the fact that talk therapy may be as good as or better than drugs in the treatment of depression. Insurance company reimbursement rates and policies are part of the reason. A psychiatrist can earn $150 for three 15-minute visits compared with $90 for a 45-minute talk session.

In 2009, the median annual income for psychiatrists was $191,000 according to surveys by a medical trade group. Dr. Levin’s wife said: “This is about volume” and if we spend two minutes extra or five minutes with every one of 40 patients a day, that means we’re here two hours longer every day. And we just can’t do it.”

Today, psychiatry is about volume, as we become a nation of factory medicine, we will short change the patient, and fill the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry executives. The most profitable area of drug sales is psychotropic drugs. Mood altering drugs aimed at brain chemistry such as anti-depressants, stimulants, anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic drugs exceeded $82 billion a year in 2003. The new generations of anti-psychotic drugs are drugs that have been either settled recently for causing harm or are under investigation for health care fraudulent claims.

The truth is the profession of psychiatry has been co-opted by the legal drug cartels.

The real culprit behind depression

(NaturalHealth365) A new study reveals that fast foods destroy your ability to be happy, enjoy sex plus think clearly. Scientifically proven – a “happy meal” is far worse than you can imagine. So, while politician debate about the deficit, health insurance and war – the legal sale of burgers, fries and soda are killing people – every day!

According to a recent study by scientist from the University of Las Palms de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada, eating commercial baked goods such as cakes, croissants, doughnuts (and fast food) can cause depression. This study published in Public Health Nutrition revealed that fast food eaters are 51% more than likely to become depressed that those who eat little to none.

The lead author of the study Almudena Sanchez-Villegas says, “the more fast food you consume, the greater risk of depression.”

A study by researchers at the University of York and Hull York Medical School has confirmed a link between depression and low levels of folate. The research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, reviewed 11 previous studies involving 15,315 participants showing that low levels of this nutrient is tied to depression. Folate is the nutrient that is lacking in all baked products.

A better way to eliminate depression

Big pharma (toxic chemical) remedies have failed to provide a long-term solution for depression. Drug companies don’t want you to know that emotional upset can be virtually eliminated without the use of a prescription pad. Remember, your lack of medication is NOT the cause of mental disorders. (your diet is the key)

Depression is the leading cause of disability and the number one psychological disorder in the western world. It is a problem seen in all age groups, including the young. At the rate it is increasing is will be the second most disabling condition in the world, the first being heart disease.

It is estimated that about 40 million Americans alone will suffer from depression at some time. About 10 times more people suffer from major depression now than in the 1940′s. In fact, depression affects 121 million people worldwide.

The scope of the problem is wider than the statistics, only half of all depression cases are documented. The available figures are only on patients that seek care or are discovered to have the condition through either surveys or studies.

The sad truth about conventional doctors

Poor food choices are known to diminish our physical health, so it would be fair to say that cognitive decline would be damaged – on a fast food diet. Unfortunately, your (conventional) physician never received adequate training about the relationship between diet and emotions. If you’re not getting positive results with current treatment options – get a second opinion from a well-trained naturopath.

A recent report in Neurology showed an association between unfavorable markers of vitamin B12 status with reduced brain volume and function. Low vitamin B12 can create depression along with fatigue. The brain is known as the “Erogenous Zone” and critical to how we perceive the world around us.

The recommendations for preventing depression are: Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D3, B complex, resveratrol, zinc and a diet loaded with fruits and vegetables. People on a Mediterranean diet have a much lower rate of depression compared to the standard American diet. Polyunsaturated fats found in fish and olive oil along with a high consumption of vegetables are what makes a healthy diet so valuable.

Fast food (or dead food) is linked to heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and depression. If you want to enjoy a long, healthy life – you know what to do. Don’t wait for a life-threatening medical diagnosis before you take action.

Hemp oil effectively kills cancer cells

(NaturalHealth365) Hemp oil may be considered a miracle substance on many levels; it seems to have cured many people of terminal cancer, diabetes, pain, depression, anxiety, and many other conditions. However, the real mystery is – why has hemp oil been banned as an illegal substance.

Perhaps the real reason is simple; conventional medicine and big pharmaceutical companies do NOT want to lose profits to a natural cure. You see, treatments like chemotherapy have huge profit margins and big pharma does not want any competition. Simply put, profits are being protected – at the expense of quality, patient care and (more) positive results.

Once again – good science proves that nature can provide a cure for serious disease

A Harvard study, released in April of 2007, shows that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, cuts tumor growth in common lung cancer in half, while at the same time significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread. You think we’ll hear about this in the mainstream media today?

This is the first set of experiments to show that the compound, THC activates naturally produced receptors to fight off lung cancer. A British pilot study showed that when researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells – the tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group.

There was also a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression.

THC has been shown to promote cancer cell death

In 1998, a research team at Madrid’s Complutense University discovered that THC can selectively induce programmed cell suicide in brain tumor cells without negatively impacting surrounding healthy cells. They reported, in the journal Natural Medicine, that injections of synthetic THC eradicated the malignant brain tumors in one-third of the treated rats, and prolonged the life of another third.

The synthetic version destroyed the incurable brain tumors, while the non-synthetic THC is even more powerful. The first experiment documenting pot’s anti-tumor effect took place in 1974 at the Medical College of Virginia. The outcome was that the active component, THC slowed the growth of lung cancer, breast cancer, and a virus induce leukemia in animal models.

By the way, this study was funded by the National Institute of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system. Instead, scientists found that THC slowed the growth of the three kind of cancers mentioned above. Naturally, what did the DEA do? They quickly shut down the Virginia study.

The power of Hemp Oil

Hemp oil has long been recognized as one of the most beneficial substances known. Medicinal hemp oil is derived from hemp buds, it is regarded as a treatment for many ailments. Keep in mind, the hemp oil mentioned (in this article) is NOT the hemp oil found in health food stores.

Every cancer patient should learn about Rick Simpson

Rick Simpson is a pioneer in the use of hemp oil as medicine. He has been helping people recover from many conditions including terminal cancer. His results have been nothing short of amazing. But, the reason why (most) people never hear about Rick – is because it’s illegal for this to take place in the United States.

Government agencies simply view his plants as “bad” for society and wish to charge him with a crime – even though he does NOT sell pot, he just helped desperate people by giving away hemp oil – free of charge. He has saved many lives and the testimonials are easy to find online.

So far, the powers that be have maligned everything healthy for us including sunlight, and promoted every thing that holds great dangers for us, such as pharmaceutical drugs, stomach wrenching chemotherapy, and toxic amounts of radiation.

They have sabotaged our food, air, and water and made it a wasteland of chemicals, and yet they have the nerve to deny us a natural substance that may be able to save us from the carnage they brought to this land.

How wheat is slowly killing millions of people

$

0

(NaturalHealth365) Genetic manipulation and hybridization has taken what was considered the staff of life to an engineered monstrosity. Wheat has become more than a staple at family meals; it has worked its way into becoming a filler for everything from soups, vodka, lipstick and just about every product on supermarket shelves. But is it healthy?

The worst “frankenfood” of the 21 century

According to Dr. William Davis, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based preventive cardiologist, wheat has “drug like” toxic effects on our body. In fact, many health experts agree that wheat allergies are the source of many people’s health problems – they just don’t know it. And, to make matter worse, getting off these products can have drug-like (negative) side effects.

“Modern” (dwarf) wheat, which through genetic manipulation and hybridization is designed to put food on the plates of millions of starving people – is a chemical solution that has put nature and chemical processing on a colliding course. This monster food creation has too much gluten for the human body and has contributed to everything from obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, depression and much more.

The dangers of modern farming practices

Today, we see farmers getting rid of specific (natural) wheat traits and mixing non-wheat plants – to introduce entirely unique genes. By using chemicals – to induce mutations that can be propagated in the offspring – they create BASF’s Clearfield wheat. And, of course, exposing the seeds to the industrial chemical sodium azide is highly toxic to humans.

Worst of all, according to Dr.William Davis, by definition, hybridization, backcrossing, and mutation-inducing techniques are difficult to control, unpredictable, and generate plenty of unexpected results. Dr. Davis, as well as many other medical doctors, warn us that these farming practices are the worse kind of genetic modifications.

How your diet can promote disease

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, dwarf wheat contains excessive levels of the “super starch” – Amylopectin. This is a super starch that can make two slices of whole wheat bread spike your blood sugar more than two tablespoons of sugar.

In addition, dwarf wheat contains “super gluten”, a chemical capable of setting off body-wide inflammation. Gluten can help trigger Celiac disease along with insulin resistance, weight gain and diabetes. In fact, there are substantial collaborative studies that see the rise in autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel syndrome and the list goes on and on.

Is your diet making you a drug addict?

By eating wheat – you can actually cause hunger and food addictions. Dr. Hyman has said, “This is because the food product is formulated with a ‘super drug’ or proteins that, when digested in the body, create a drug-induced high.”

According to Dr. William Davis, “National Institutes of Health researchers showed that gluten-derived polypeptides can cross into the brain and bind to the brain’s opiate receptors.” This is a super drug in that it can solicit a mild euphoria, which is what creates an addiction, and brings on binge eating.

It’s time to wake up and get healthy

Obviously, these food addictions and illnesses only benefit food producers and conventional medicine. By affecting the human brain in the same way as morphine, we will see generations of insulin resistant people, high obesity rates, sickness rising, and an industry that will prosper with people eating way over 100 pounds of wheat per year.

Health-minded people are finding their own health solutions from the paleo, primal and low carb to gluten free diets. It’s impossible to know what the future will be – due to the manipulation of our food supply. But, as always, vote with your purchasing power to help change the world.

Natural healing tips for depression

$
0
0

Safe Body Detoxification(NaturalHealth365) Natural healing doesn’t have to be complicated – especially when it comes to helping people with depression or anxiety. With the right information – you can virtually eliminate the symptoms of depression without harmful (toxic) drugs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every ten people reports being depressed. The findings were that people between 45 and 64 were the most depressed, with women outnumbering men. The deep south of the United States had the highest levels of depression, in some areas ranging up to 15 percent.

Why is there so much depression?

If you look closely at our diets and lifestyles, you can see how they’ve contributed to certain conditions associated with depression. We see diabetes; allergies; chronic fatigue; hypoglycemia; hypothyroidism; heavy metal toxicity; and many more as contributing factors. Also, we have to consider all the different drugs people ingest on a regular basis.

Add to this excessive caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, sugar, and a lack of proper exercise, and it’s actually a wonder more people aren’t depressed. What could people possibly be thinking?

How is memory loss connected to depression?

Depression accounts for at least 10 percent of all cases of cognitive impairment. What we mistakenly believe are the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease may in fact be symptoms of clinical depression. In one study, 30 percent of folks over 65 were found to suffer from clinical depression.

That adds another 15 million people to the already 40 million plus depressed people in the United States alone.

If a major depression lasts for as long as a decade, it can be a contributing factor in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. This can be detected by a deficiency in norepinephrine, which is responsible for stimulation. When this neurotransmitter is in short supply, people tend to speak and move more slowly and exhibit a faraway gaze or blank stare.

Drugs and alcohol will promote depression

People who are depressed also find it easy to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, which only compounds the problem. Alcohol, caffeine, and other drugs affect production and function of norepinephrine. Herein lies a big problem: alcohol, as an example, activates the brain’s pleasure centers, which means that naturally occurring endorphins (opiates that produce pleasant feelings of well-being) are not being produced.

So, the end result is that one drinks more and more in an attempt to keep these opiate receptor sites open and activated. This means the body isn’t producing its own natural endorphins to fill the need to feel good.

Alcohol and other drugs also reduce the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin.

Dopamine is what activates the brain’s pleasure centers, responsible for personal feelings of peace and contentment. Serotonin when in short supply creates depression. When serotonin is deficient, it is hard to maintain emotional control. Both the chemical drug Prozac and the naturally grown herb St. John’s Wort inhibit serotonin destruction.

Natural healing remedies will NOT threaten your life

Of course, St. John’s Wort doesn’t have the side effects that Prozac does. Another safe supplement that has been successfully used is SAMe, which has no side effects and works by increasing the glutathione levels in brain cells and preventing the dangerous lipid peroxidation that destroys these cells. Glutathione is richly supplied in asparagus, avocado, and walnuts. SAMe also alleviates depression by halting the continual looping of depressing thoughts.

When we consider that all thoughts are electrochemical signals processed by the brain and endocrine system, shouldn’t it make us more conscious of how those thoughts affect our mental and physical health?

Are negative thoughts slowly killing you?

Just consider how we can literally wear ourselves out with anger, sadness, envy, fear, and worry. All of us know what energy drains such emotions can be. So, what can we do about it?

First, establish a regular exercise program. Exercise will flush your body with those great-feeling opiates called endorphins; it allows your body to naturally fill those receptor sites and give you that overall feeling of well-being. Next, learn to relax your mind. Set aside a regular time each day for meditation.

Developing the ability to simply watch your thoughts will, in time, give you the strength to focus only on the ones that are beneficial. As your concentration gets stronger, like a trained muscle, you’ll be able to maintain a very peaceful state where you’re not at all affected by what you think.

The day may then come when you realize you’re far more than your thoughts and you’re actually the one in control of what happens to you. This is when you go from depression to elation and experience a deep inner peace.

I hope that these insights serve you well and you’ve found them beneficial. Please share your comments – below.

How to avoid dopamine deficiency and depression

$
0
0

Depression Solutions(NaturalHealth365) The brain is run through an electrical circuitry that depends upon key neurotransmitters. Dopamine is associated with the ‘pleasure system’ of the brain and allows us to feel enjoyment and a sense of reward in order to motivate performance. It also helps with focus and attention and the ability to feel pleasure.

There are key lifestyle strategies and superfoods that help enhance our dopaminergic system.

Individuals with low dopamine levels often experience hopelessness, worthlessness and an inability to handle stress. They often isolate themselves from others and they have self-destructive thoughts and behaviors. Being easily distracted and unable to focus and having a hard time finishing tasks can also be a sign of early dopamine deficiencies.

Diseases and lifestyle behaviors associated with low dopamine

Dopamine is involved with modulating mood, attention and ability to learn. It is known as the pleasure system of the brain which is evidenced in animal studies where animals will choose dopamine over food and water until their death. We see this same behavior in humans who are addicted to drugs, gambling, alcohol, sex, food and extreme sports. All of us get surges of dopamine from different activities that give us pleasure.

The most common lifestyle factors that alter dopamine signaling include poor blood sugar balance, alcohol or drug abuse, poor gut function, adrenal fatigue and brain inflammation. These things must be addressed for optimal brain function.

If you feel that you have signs and signals of low dopamine be sure to follow an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan with high quality supplements targeted at improving gut function and reducing oxidative stress levels in the body.

Key nutrients our body needs to produce adequate dopamine levels include D,L phenylalanine, beta-phenylethylamine (PEA) and N-acetyl L-tyrosine, vitamin B6, folate, selenium, glutathione, zinc and magnesium. Here are some of the richest food sources of the following:

Raw chocolate, also called cacao, this superfood is loaded with dopamine boosting nutrients. It is one of the best sources of PEA’s which are natural compounds that cross over the blood brain barrier and stimulate and modulate the release of dopamine in the brain. Cacao is also very rich in magnesium and zinc and chromium which help to balance and stabilize blood sugar.

Cacao also helps to boost serotonin and contains the endorphin anandamide – which is considered the ‘bliss chemical’. This combination of ingredients makes raw chocolate the best mood boosting superfood. Be careful not to overdo the chocolate though as the body may develop a sensitivity to some of the compounds in the chocolate and create adrenal stress.

Blueberries are rich in the flavonoid antioxidants anthocyanin which has been shown to protect some of the major regions in the brain that control dopamine secretions. A 2006 study, published in Nutritional Neuroscience demonstrated that blueberry extract prevented oxidative stress associated stress to the substantia nigra and striatum regions of the brain. This is particularly important for Parkinson’s disease prevention but also for general improvement in motor coordination and dopamine signaling patterns.

Don’t forget to eat plenty of almonds, Brazil nuts, chia, hemp and pumpkin seeds

Brazil nuts are extremely high in selenium which is a critical nutrient needed for healthy dopamine production. Almonds are high in tyrosine and pumpkin seeds are rich in B vitamins such as B6, folate and the trace mineral zinc which are all necessary for healthy dopamine production. Chia and hemp seeds supply a perfect ratio of omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants and gamma linoleic acid – necessary for healthy hormones and neurotransmitters.

Be sure to have the majority of your nut intake from soaked, steamed or sprouted nuts and seeds. You can simply put these nuts/seeds into some clean water and let sit overnight and then drain, rinse and dry. This will wash away phytic acids, enzyme inhibitors and many of the lectins and other anti-nutrients that these nuts and seeds contain.

You can also stick them in your steamer with veggies you may be steaming such as brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. This removes many of the anti-nutrients and makes them softer and easier to consume and digest.

What is the best kind of dairy food?

Raw dairy from 100% grass-fed cows, goats and sheep is extraordinarily rich in omega 3 fatty acids, choline and CLA – which all enhance hormone and neurotransmitter function. Additionally, the fermentation process produces enzymes and probiotics that improve gut function and reduce inflammatory stress in the body. These enzymes and healthy microbes also enhance amino acid bioavailability – making it easier for the body to synthesize the alanine, tyrosine and phenylalanine necessary for healthy dopamine production.

Fermented raw dairy from grass-fed animals is also rich in glutathione precursers such as cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. They are also very rich in L-glutamine which is critical for a healthy gut membrane. Damage to the gut is one of the leading causes of neurological stress and reduced neurotransmitter activity. Using fermented raw dairy from 100% grass-fed animals is one of the best ways to enhance gut function and neurotransmitter activity.

What are the health benefits of ‘pasture-raised’ or ‘wild-caught’ animal foods?

These foods are rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants that are necessary for reducing inflammatory conditions in the brain and supporting healthy neuron and neurotransmitter connections. The more grass and sea vegetable or algae (in the case of fish) the animals consume the more nutrient dense they are.

Why should I eat cruciferous vegetables?

Cruciferous vegetables like kale, collards, brussel sprouts, chard, cabbage and cauliflower are extremely rich in sulfur compounds, B vitamins and other key anti-oxidants and trace minerals. The alium family which includes garlic, onions, chives and scallions are rich in antioxidants and sulfur compounds. Sulfur compounds boost glutathione levels – which are the key for a healthy brain and optimal dopamine release.

Cruciferous veggies are best when they are juiced, steamed or fermented in order to break down anti-nutrients and enhance the bioavailability of the nutrients. You can juice kale, steam broccoli and make fermented cabbage (sauerkraut) for optimal nutrition.

Sunlight therapy lowers ADHD, autism and depression

$

Sunlight Helps ADHD(NaturalHealth365) Do you think sunlight is healing to the human body? Unfortunately, many people have been victimized by the brainwashing marketing campaigns of the sunscreen industry and conventional dermatology. The big question remains – can sunlight actually help kids and adults recover from ADHD, autism and depression?

In the 1990’s and early 2000’s, the sun received a lot of negative publicity. Associations with skin cancer put fear into us as well as slathering sunscreen on our kids to assure they did not get burned. But within the last few years, the knowledge that the sun is healing – particularly for conditions such as ADHD and autism is causing some parents to forgo the sunscreen and embrace the sun for therapeutic benefits.

ADHD rates tend to be lower in sunny states

ADHD is the most common psychiatric childhood disorder impacting between 5-7% of children worldwide. Identified risk factors include premature birth, low birth weight, mother’s use of alcohol or tobacco during pregnancy and exposure to toxic substances such as lead.

A study published in Biological Psychiatry discovered another risk factor – lack of solar intensity. Researchers collected and analyzed multiple data sets from the United States and nine other countries and found that regions with high sunlight intensity had a lower prevalence of ADHD.

They suggest that high sunlight intensity may exert a protective effect for ADHD.

A paper published in Psychology Today states that sun intensity itself could be responsible for about 34-41% of the variance in ADHD diagnoses in different areas in children in the U.S.

Lack of sunlight exposure is linked to autism

Doctors in Sweden are seeing a rise in autism in the Somali population that has moved to Sweden. It is thought that the lack of sunlight in Sweden, combined with sunscreen and precautions to avoid sun exposure, is contributing to depression and autism. The incident of Somali children being diagnosed with autism is higher than those children still being raised in Somalia.

Researchers suspect one factor is insufficient sunlight to build up vitamin D levels. They state that dark-skinned people demand significantly more sunlight to enable vitamin D to build up in the skin.

Research, out of Denmark, has also found a correlation between the month a baby is born and their risk for autism. They found that children born in the fall and winter were almost twice as likely to have jaundice versus those born in the spring and summer. Babies who developed jaundice were 67% more likely to be diagnosed with autism during early childhood.

Exposure to sunlight breaks down bilirubin and is considered protective against jaundice. So making sure pregnant women are exposed to the sun can help protect you and your baby.

Sunlight proves to be great for depressed people

A study published in Environmental Health – which included over 14,000 people – found a link between lack of sunlight, depression and a decline in cognitive skills. The researchers state that sunlight regulates the hormones serotonin and melatonin as well as affects brain blood flower, which can impact mood and cognitive functions.

When sunlight hits the retina it stimulates the optic nerve which sends a signal to your brain to produce serotonin and melatonin and it has been reported that for depression, bright light works faster than medication – usually within a week. In fact, over fifteen controlled studies have shown that bright light is helpful for those suffering depression.

brain-stress(NaturalHealth365) Although you may not have heard of taurine, a lack of this important amino acid could result in a whole host of serious health problems. Taurine has been linked to brain function, heart and kidney function, and mental wellness, among other health conditions.

Because symptoms are so broad, it’s possible to suffer from a taurine deficiency and not even realize it. But the toll it takes on your health will be noticeable. You could even be doing things, like consuming foods containing MSG, that reduce the amount of taurine available to your body.

Good reason why the body needs taurine

Taurine is an amino acid that your body can make from two other amino acids, cysteine and methionine. Low taurine levels have been found in patients suffering from a long list of conditions, including hypertension, anxiety, depression, gout, hypothyroidism, autism, obesity, kidney failure and infertility, among others.

Taurine plays a critical role in several of the body’s systems, including cardiac function, brain and nervous system and vision. Research also shows that taurine promotes new brain cell formation and restoration of aging brain cells.

But taurine plays additional roles as well. It works as an antioxidant, removing potentially damaging oxidizing agents. Taurine also plays a critical role in detoxifying the body. It aids in fat absorption and elimination of toxins, while also helping to eliminate cholesterol through bile.

The connection between taurine deficiency and chronic diseases

There are a number of symptoms that can signal a taurine deficiency, including feelings of anxiety, depression, insomnia, restlessness, migraines, insomnia, agitation, irritability, and obsessions. It’s quite possible to be suffering a taurine deficiency without even recognizing it.

You are also at greater risk if you are obese, a smoker or have heart disease. Low or high levels of iron in the blood can also be a signal of taurine deficiency. Certain medical conditions can set the stage for taurine deficiency as well. For example, if you suffer from candida or are infected with disease-producing anaerobic bacteria, you are more likely to be at risk.

When should I get tested for a taurine deficiency?

You may want to consider being tested for a taurine deficiency if you have any of the symptoms noted above. You may also want to consider being tested if you are under heavy physical demands, or if you suspect intestinal, immune system or liver problems.

Animal and fish protein, eggs and brewer’s yeast are some of the best dietary sources for ensuring adequate amounts of taurine. According to Dr. Leonard Smith, surgeon and expert in the use of nutrition and natural supplementation, the most accurate test for taurine is a whole blood test.

He suggests expectant mothers and breastfeeding mothers should also be tested. Taurine deficiency can be particularly risky for fetuses and newborns.

What are the best recommendations for supplementation? Dr. Smith notes that recommended supplemental dosages of taurine range from 500 mg to 6 g. Signs of toxicity from too much taurine are peptic ulcers and diarrhea.

The recommended dosage for adults is 13-16 mg. per 2.2 lbs. of bodyweight. Infants and small children need only take 27-58 mg. per 2.2 lbs. of body weight.

Keep in mind, certain health conditions will warrant different dosages. For example, if you suffer from heart disease, you will want to take 5 to 6 grams of a taurine supplement, divided into three dosages.

dr-kelly-brogan(NaturalHealth365) It’s a topic that has many of her fellow psychiatrists squirming, but Dr. Kelly Brogan, M.D., did not anticipate the cold reception she received from major media with the launch of her new book, “A Mind of Your Own.” In it, she openly advocates a non-toxic treatment protocol to eliminate depression in women (and men) plus highlights the misuse of drugs as the go-to cure for mental illnesses.

Clearly, the days are past when the editorial departments of news organizations made a big deal out of separating themselves from the advertising departments. In this age of blurred lines between mainstream media and social media, and between news and advertorials, the hunt for the lion’s share of advertising dollars has left objective news coverage scarce. All the better to seek the truth from experts willing to tell the truth—like Dr. Kelly Brogan.

Editor’s note: Get your copy of “A Mind of Your Own” today!  Let’s make this book the ‘most read’ book about depression and, at the same time, show big pharma that the truth can NOT be suppressed!

Conventional drug treatments will never cure depression

Dr. Brogan began her career path like many psychiatrists. A Manhattan-based holistic women’s health psychiatrist, she graduated from Cornell University Medical College, completed her psychiatric training and fellowship at NYU Medical Center, and holds a B.S. from MIT in Systems Neuroscience.  After years of conventional training, Dr. Brogan – a board certified psychiatrist – came to realize that toxic-drug ‘therapies’ failed to offer a solution and quickly developed an integrative (holistic) medical practice.

Dr. Brogan discovered conventional modes of treatment – characterized by heavy reliance on pharmaceuticals – was actually doing a huge injustice to her patients and her practice.  Her discovery of natural methods for controlling depression, particularly in women, through the use of diet and other means, is at the heart of her book, A Mind of Your Own.

kelly-brogan-728x90
So monumental is her journey that prominent New York book dealers were lined up at her door, hoping to successfully win the rights to her new book. Her publisher, HarperCollins, offered a lucrative book deal and made barely a mark to her original manuscript. But that is where her journey took a different turn.

While pre-release sales on Amazon.com catapulted her book to number one in several categories, her new publisher was surprised to find the galley shunned by major media, with none of the expected invitations to for appearances or tours.  So, what’s the reason for the ‘silent treatment?’

Those major media outlets are supported in large part with advertising dollars from big pharma.  Inviting Dr. Brogan as a guest and allowing her to speak the truth about the dangers of pharmaceutical use in treating depression would put all that revenue at risk, a step the major media outlets refused to take.

Let’s brush aside the pharmaceutical companies and support the truth

That’s why Dr. Brogan is enlisting the help of individuals like you, who already understand the need to ensure the truth reaches the masses. Not only about the over-use of pharmaceuticals in the treatment of depression in women, but the misuse of drugs to treat mental health issues in general.

Show the mainstream media and those big corporate controllers that the grassroots movement is alive and well, and that the truth about safe, natural and effective remedies cannot be silenced.

Start here by buying a copy of Dr. Brogan’s book, A Mind of Your Own.  Then, take steps to promote her book so that a broader population can understand what is going on in the treatment of depression in women and why it is so harmful.

Call your local bookstore and ask them to stock the book if they don’t already have it on their shelves, then buy copies for your friends and family members.  Use your social media accounts to promote Dr. Brogan’s book using the hashtag #amindofyourown.

Take a selfie with your copy and tag your location.

Let’s boost Dr. Brogan’s book to the top of the New York Bestseller’s List!  Together, we can show big pharma that dollars are not going to get in the way of promoting the truth about natural healing.

3 ways to beat depression naturally

woman-happy-in-grass(NaturalHealth365) Looking for a natural treatment for depression?  Well, get ready for some great news.  Because we have 3 highly effective alternatives to toxic medication.

We know that millions of Americans deal with depression on a regular basis. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.7% of U.S. adults have faced a major depressive disorder in the past year and the problem is worldwide.

A failed system: Conventional medicine is too quick to offer antidepressant medication as the go-to treatment for depression.  However, many of these drugs bring a range of harmful and dangerous side effects. The truth is there are many natural ways to combat depression. The following are three of the most effective:

Turmeric (curcumin) shown to be a natural treatment for depression without negative side effects

Turmeric is a delicious spice found in Indian and Asian cooking. It is also extremely beneficial when used therapeutically for depression.

Studies have found that turmeric, also referred to as curcumin, can stop depression as effectively as antidepressant drugs – and without the negative and harmful side effects often associated with them. Researchers believe that it inhibits the depression enzyme monoamine oxidase. Curcumin also boosts the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which help to reduce depression as well as anxiety.

In contrast, common pharmaceutical medications like Prozac can cause side effects like sleep disturbances, anxiety, schizophrenic behavior and suicidal ideation.

The study found that using 500 mg of standardized, bioavailable curcumin extract twice per day was effective against major depressive disorder. Absorption is enhanced by taking it with healthy fats like avocado, olive oil or coconut oil.

Niacin (vitamin B3) has been easing depression successfully for decades

Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is another potent depression and anxiety cure. It has been studied extensively by Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D. and has been found to be safe, affordable and highly effective against depression and other mental disorders.

Vitamin B3 is also effective against anxiety, alcoholism, and even schizophrenia. Those with depression should strongly consider avoiding the hazards of antidepressant side effects in favor of a natural cure like niacin:

Beat depression and improve brain function with a healthy diet

Finally, one of the top depression cures that’s readily available to anyone is a healthy diet. It is as simple as making the proper choices every week at the grocery store.

Treatment for depression through diet can be accomplished by favoring foods high in polyphenols. These compounds are prevalent in plant foods and are effective in reducing oxidative stress and improving synaptic plasticity in the brain.

A 2012 study published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience showed showed that polyphenols improved cognitive functioning as well as psychiatric disorders like depression.  A British Journal of Health Psychology study found that diets high in fruits and vegetables improved both mood and brain functioning.

Foods richest in polyphenols include blueberries, blackberries, flax seeds, hazelnuts, dark chocolate and herbal teas. Foods high in omega 3s such as oily fish, nuts, flaxseed oil, and legumes are also effective against depression. Avoiding gluten, artificial ingredients and processed foods will boost your mood and promotes clarity of thought.

So, as you can see, a natural treatment for depression is not only safe and effective but, it’s available to all of us now.  If you suffer from depression, don’t become a victim of poor medical advice.  Work with a qualified healthcare provider (if needed) – who appreciates the power of nutrition to heal the body.

Top foods that cause depression and destroy your mental wellbeing

depression(NaturalHealth365)  Could depression be caused by your diet?  The link between unhealthy eating habits and chronic disease and disorders, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and increased incidence of stroke, are well known.  But, what about emotional wellbeing?

There is a growing body of evidence showing a strong connection between mental and emotional health, and a diet dominated by processed foods and refined sugar.

The link between sugar and depression

1. Sugars and sweets
Research is beginning to make the link between sugar’s ability to raise levels of inflammation throughout the brain and body to higher incidences of depression. For example, a study published in the JAMA Psychiatry discovered that brain inflammation was 30 percent higher in clinically depressed patients.

Another study found that patients who took medication to reduce inflammation due to autoimmune or inflammatory disease were less likely to develop symptoms of depression. These findings further underscore a link between the effects of sugar in causing inflammation and increased incidence of depression. Reducing your intake of sugary foods and replacing them with anti-inflammatory choices can improve your mood.

2. Refined carbohydrates
Simple, refined carbohydrates have been in the spotlight in recent years for their lack of nutrients and contributions to the growing obesity epidemic. But Columbia University researchers wanted to find out if those simple carbs could also spark depression. With data gleaned from the Women’s Health Initiative, tracking more than 70,000 women, the study results showed that the higher a woman’s blood sugar jumped after consuming sugar and refined grains, the greater her risk of developing depression.

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers noted that their study also showed the opposite to be true: women consuming a diet high in whole grains and healthy produce reduced their risk of depression.

3. Trans fats
You have probably heard that healthy fats and oils, like extra virgin olive oil, can lower your risk of several serious health conditions, including heart disease and depression. But the opposite is also true. Research has shown that consuming too many unhealthy trans fats can increase your chances of depression by as much as 48 percent.

4. Artificial sweeteners
If you are thinking about giving up sugar and satisfying your sweet tooth with foods laden with aspartame, think again. While you may be able to reduce your calories, these sugar alternatives are best avoided if you already suffer from symptoms of depression because research has shown they can drastically worsen symptoms.

Researchers at the University of Northwestern Ohio had to stop a study of artificial sweeteners because some participants developed suicidal thoughts. Those individuals who did not previously suffer from depression were not affected in the same way, although there is evidence that artificial sweeteners can significantly lower serotonin levels in the brain.

Choosing a healthy diet to promote mental health

Nearly all scientific studies examining the link between poor diet and mental illnesses like depression have been focused on a specific food. But research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry looked at the diets of 3,000 people and found that those who ate the most processed foods, had a much higher rate of depression while those who ate primarily whole foods saw their rate of depression drop.

Choosing a healthy diet dominated by whole foods, complex carbohydrates and natural fruit-derived sweeteners not only helps you manage your weight and reduce chances of serious illness, but it can improve your mental health as well. Clear your kitchen of processed foods, sugary snacks and artery-clogging trans fats. Not only will you improve your physical health, but you can expect to see your mood brighten as well.

Strong link between low omega-3 blood levels and depression

blood-sample(NaturalHealth365) A new Japanese study has found a significant correlation between depression symptoms and low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the bloodstream.  The study results also underscore the need to reduce inflammation in order to avoid health issues, such as depression.

Depression affects about 6.7 percent of adults in the United States and is even higher in persons over the age of 40.  The prescription drugs so often prescribed to treat depression tend only to be partially effective. These drugs are also linked with a wide range of unwanted side effects such as nausea, constipation, sexual dysfunction, and in some cases, suicidal thoughts.

Omega-3 helps to reduce inflammation – one of the precursors to depression

The Japanese study results show a strong connection between depression and chronic inflammation in the body. Because of this, key supplements with proven anti-inflammatory effects such as omega-3s are crucial in reducing the symptoms of depression.

The study evaluated over 2,100 persons age 40 or older who were evaluated using a standard 20 question test for depression. Their blood then was tested for levels of different fatty acid types. The results showed that the persons who had the lowest omega-3 levels tended to have the highest risk of depression. Conversely, higher levels of omega-3s corresponded with a lowered risk of depressive symptoms by as much as 43 percent.

The list of benefits of omega-3 keeps growing

The subjects were tested further based on specific types of fatty acids, namely DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Both compounds were correlated with combating depression, with high levels of DHA reducing the risk of depression by 42 percent, and high EPA levels lowering risk by 36 percent.

The study results have profound implications.  Inflammation is more prevalent in everyone after age 40, which means that in addition to other medical conditions, their mental health could be at risk. However, taking a dietary supplement rich in omega-3s including DHA and EPA could provide protection and relief. This is particularly important for persons who have a history of depression.

Omega-3s have a multitude of other health effects as well, including benefits to metabolic and cardiovascular health. They reduce the risk of asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, dementia, and many other diseases that are associated with aging.

Additional studies support the benefits of omega-3 – taken daily

A number of other studies show the protective effect and benefits of omega-3 and fish oil supplementation for protection against depression.  As a side note, the antidepressant drug citalopram was found to be more effective when patients took an omega-3 supplement.  So, even if you feel compelled to take prescription medication – don’t ignore the value of omega-3 supplements.

By the way, the daily dose of omega-3 was two 1,000 mg capsules – twice daily – for a total of 4,000 mg per day.

Another study found persons in treatment for hepatitis C had significantly reduced depressive episodes when they took an EPA supplement daily. In addition, omega-3s have also been shown to reduce inflammation and depression in patients being treated for kidney issues.

Remember, the value of taking a daily omega-3 supplement is clear, especially after the age of 40.  Fight the effects of aging and reduce your risk of depression by ensuring you get enough omega-3s.

How to avoid dopamine deficiency and depression

$

How taurine deficiency can cause brain shrinkage, anxiety and depression

brain-stress(NaturalHealth365) Although you may not have heard of taurine, a lack of this important amino acid could result in a whole host of serious health problems.

Medical doctor gets blacklisted for telling the truth about depression

dr-kelly-brogan(NaturalHealth365) It’s a topic that has many of her fellow psychiatrists squirming, but Dr.

Together, we can show big pharma that dollars are not going to get in the way of promoting the truth about natural healing.

naturalhealth365 podcast(NaturalHealth365) In 60 years, not a single study has proven that depression or anxiety, for that matter, is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
